Shelter
At Shelter, we exist to defend the right to a safe home.
Home is a human right. It's our foundation and it's where we thrive. Yet, everyday millions of people are being devastated by the housing emergency.
For years, successive governments haven’t built enough social homes, private renters have very little protection in an unregulated system, and welfare support isn’t good enough.
Our housing system is broken and it's left millions without a safe, stable home.
Homelessness is a growing problem and people are dying on our streets.
We offer expert information and personalised help with housing issues and homelessness via our website, emergency helpline and one-to-one advice and support services. Our solicitors provide free legal advice and attend court to help people who’ve lost their homes or are facing eviction.
And we’re campaigning for housing justice:
- We work in communities to understand the problem and change the system. And we run national campaigns to fight for change at the top.
- We carry out ground-breaking research to understand the UK’s housing problems and develop policies to solve them.
- We work with the media to make sure the voices of those affected by the housing emergency are heard.
